I don't understand this scene in Atonement (film)?

Like James McAvoy's character is walking through the forest and he
finds all those dead young women lying on the ground...you can see
head wounds on each one and McAvoy's character looks very
distressed....

Was this historical or symbolic? Can someone please explain?
